Amgen Tour of CA "Breakaway Mile" Honors Paso Robles Cancer Survivors

150 Community Members March Across the Finish Line. Breakaway Mile led by Deleena Rankin, local Breakaway from Cancer Champion

Breakaway from CancerThe Breakaway Mile is a special walk of 150 community members including cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and advocates. Prior to the professional finish of Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California, the Breakaway Mile crosses the finish line to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide and celebrates scientific innovations.

Local resident and brain cancer survivor Deleena Rankin will be honored and celebrated as the Breakaway from Cancer® Champion during the Paso Robles Breakaway Mile. Rankin’s perseverance, faith, and determination inspire and motivate everyone around her. Diagnosed in November 2010, Deleena has been left with limited eyesight, but she continues to remain committed to cycling to regain her strength.

This is one of five "Breakaway Miles" created by Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative to increase awareness of the important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention through survivorship.

Who/Visuals:

  • 150 cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and advocates
  • Jon Oliner, Amgen’s Scientific Director
  • Kim Thiboldeaux, Cancer Support Community

When:
Thursday, May 19; expected Breakaway Mile Timing: 2:30-3:00 p.m.

Where:
Starting at 4th and Spring Streets and concluding at race finish line (Spring between 10th/11th)

Why:
There are nearly 12 million cancer survivors in the United States today and more than 1.5 million Americans will be diagnosed this year alone. Similar to the support team that helps a cyclist breakaway from the peloton, it takes a strong support network to help a person break away from cancer.

Founded in 2005 by Amgen, Breakaway from Cancer® is a national initiative to increase awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention through survivorship. Through Breakaway from Cancer, Amgen has joined forces with four nonprofit partner organizations: Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community (formerly known as The Wellness Community), Patient Advocate Foundation, and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. These organizations offer a broad range of support services complementing those provided by a patient’s team of healthcare professionals. For more information, visit www.breakawayfromcancer.com.
