About the Volunteer Program

The Paso Robles City Library Volunteer Program was instituted in 1995 to help the library staff make full use of its beautiful new building. Starting with only a handful of volunteers, the program has grown to be one of California’s most innovative models of volunteerism.

Today, our volunteer program is essential to the daily operation of the Library with over 140 volunteers contributing over 16,000 hours of their time and talents each year. Library Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and their contributions to the library community are immeasurable - assisting in circulation, reference, computers, children’s services, processing, interlibrary loans, mending and various outreach programs. They staff the Friends of the Library gift store and process the donated materials that arrive daily. They read, play games, monitor computer use and provide homework help for children. Volunteers appointed by the city council to the five-member Library Board of Trustees set goals and formulate policy to address the needs and desires of the community. Directors on the sixteen-member Library Foundation raise the funds needed to enhance current programs and purchase additional materials.

Why Volunteer?

There are many reasons for volunteering. For some, it is a chance to meet new people, to work in pleasant surroundings, to develop new skills, or to give something back to the community. Participation in the Library Volunteer Program will bring you learning opportunities, camaraderie, challenges, and fun.

The Library offers two adult volunteer programs. Library Express! is a six-week, two-hours-per-week, opportunity to assist staff in shelving materials, cleaning, and completing various tasks. The ongoing program is a two-to-four-hours-per-week, one-year commitment that provides an opportunity for a broader learning experience. Fingerprinting is required for most positions.

As a Library Volunteer you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you are providing a much-needed, much-valued service to the community. Through your participation, the Library will continue to be a place where both you and the community are enriched by your efforts. Thank You!
