Why Volunteer?
There are many reasons for volunteering. For some, it is a chance to meet new people, to work in pleasant surroundings, to develop new skills, or to give something back to the community. Participation in the Library Volunteer Program will bring you learning opportunities, camaraderie, challenges, and fun.
The Library offers two adult volunteer programs. Library Express! is a six-week, two-hours-per-week, opportunity to assist staff in shelving materials, cleaning, and completing various tasks. The ongoing program is a two-to-four-hours-per-week, one-year commitment that provides an opportunity for a broader learning experience. Fingerprinting is required for most positions.
As a Library Volunteer youll have the satisfaction of knowing you are providing a much-needed, much-valued service to the community. Through your participation, the Library will continue to be a place where both you and the community are enriched by your efforts. Thank You!
About the Library Volunteer Program
The Paso Robles City Library Volunteer Program was instituted in 1995 to help the library staff make full use of its beautiful new building. Starting with only a handful of volunteers, the program has grown to be one of California’s most innovative models of volunteerism.
Today, our volunteer program is essential to the daily operation of the Library with over 140 volunteers contributing over 16,000 hours of their time and talents each year. Library Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and their contributions to the library community are immeasurable - assisting in circulation, reference, computers, children’s services, processing, interlibrary loans, mending and various outreach programs. They staff the Friends of the Library gift store and process the donated materials that arrive daily. They read, play games, monitor computer use and provide homework help for children. Volunteers appointed by the city council to the five-member Library Board of Trustees set goals and formulate policy to address the needs and desires of the community. Directors on the sixteen-member Library Foundation raise the funds needed to enhance current programs and purchase additional materials.
Adult Volunteer Opportunities
The Paso Robles City Library offers volunteer opportunities in many areas of library service, from "up front and personal" to "behind the scenes" and several areas in-between. For most Library volunteer positions, the commitment is 2-4 hours, one day per week. All require a positive attitude and a desire to have fun!

High Energy Needed Here!
If you are a
people person, are detail oriented, and aren't afraid to
learn new computer tricks, the Circulation Desk may be the
place for you. This is a great position for discovering
wonderful books, CDs, DVDs and other materials.
Got Answers?
Do you have a little
Sherlock Holmes in you? Do you love solving mysteries? Can
you think outside the box? Sometimes it takes a bit of
sleuthing to help library patrons find the information they
need and Reference Desk volunteers are at the ready! If you
work well with the public, are patient, and can think
creatively, then the Reference Desk might just be the job
for you!
Family Volunteering?
You bet!
Adopt-A-Shelf (or a special area) is a great way for parents
to teach their children civic responsibility and have fun
doing it!
It’s All in the Details
A
behind-the-scenes job, Materials Processors prepare
materials for circulation—a great way to see what's new in
the library collection before anyone else! And our Menders
keep materials clean and in good working order.
I Know It's Here Somewhere
If you've
ever looked for a book that is supposed to be on the shelf
and you just can't find it, then you know how important
correctly shelved materials are to the user-friendly
library. Shelving is a great position for discovering all
the wonderful materials the library has to offer.
If You Love Children
There are
several positions in the Children's Library that may appeal
to you - all require patience and a good sense of humor!
Storytime volunteers plan and present weekly storytime
programs. If you enjoy reading aloud, the Grandparents and
Books program makes visiting the library an enriching
experience for children. And if you haven’t made a diorama
in years, you just might need to brush up on your skills if
you help in the Study Center, a satellite facility, open
Monday - Wednesday after school. Library staff and
volunteers are on hand to help students with homework,
research, and reports, to read to them, or to just play
games together.
Like Shopping?
If you like to shop,
then you've probably wondered what's involved in selecting,
purchasing, and arranging those items you see displayed in
your favorite stores. The Paso Robles Friends of the Library
is looking for a few good men and women to help run their
gift store, located just off the Library/City Hall lobby.
Energetic seniors are perfect for this job! Friends can
always use help with their monthly Book Sales, too.
Need Flexibility?
No, not as in yoga.
As in time! The Library Docent position offers the same
benefits as other positions in the Library without the
day/time commitment. Library Docents provide two valuable
services to the community: they lead tours and they proctor
tests. Whether a tour guide or a test proctor, you choose
whether a tour or test fits in with your busy schedule.
Tours are generally 30-45 minutes in length; tests are
generally 1-3 hours. Test proctoring duties include
collecting fees for proctoring and monitoring test takers to
ensure the school's instructions are being followed.
Tour guide duties include meeting prescheduled community and school groups and showing them around the library; reading a story or two, providing age-appropriate or requested information to them; and giving out handouts as requested.
Hold On!
Every day, materials such as
books, videos, DVDs, and music CDS, are requested from
patrons from other libraries. Twice a day, we generate a
list of those requests and then Holds volunteers pull the
desired materials from our shelves and start the process of
getting them to their destinations. It's like shelving, only
in reverse!
How Do I Apply?
To apply for either of the Adult Volunteer Programs, simply fill out and submit the online application.
To apply for the Teen Volunteer Program, fill out the Teen Application, print a copy, and then bring it to the Library.
