Excerpts from Paso Robles Press
The wind and sunshine was a perfect combination for
hundreds of families who turned out for the City’s Sixth Annual
Kite Fest on April 19. The sky above Barney Schwartz
Park was dotted with countless kites of all shapes, sizes and
colors.
The event featured a number of kid and family-friendly activities including free kite kits for kids to decorate and fly; face painting; and, most anticipated, the candy drop. Prior to the candy drop, the “Singing Hands Choir” performed a number of songs in Sign Language with the finale featuring the popular kite anthem, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”
Following the performance, a massive kite was loaded with 30 pounds of candy. After the kite had successfully ascended, with the pull of a cord, candy was dropped onto the field for children to collect. . . a piñata in the sky! Impressive large kites rose and fell with the wind and nationally ranked kite fliers performed their magic with kite dance synchronized to music. A beautiful display of talent, precision, and wonder graced the skies.

Fishing Derby at Barney Schwartz Park

This year’s Fishing Derby, held on Saturday, April 12, was a
wonderful, fun-filled morning for the whole family.
Kids, ages
5 – 15, gathered at Barney Schwartz Park in the hopes of
catching a trout or a bass. Five fishing poles were awarded to
the young fishermen catching the biggest fish. An additional 18
raffle prizes were given throughout the competition. Even
though not everyone caught a fish, the weather was beautiful and
kids learned how to cast, bait a worm (ugh!) and practice
patience. The event was co-sponsored by the Library and
Recreation Services Department, the Fire Department, the Police
Department, and the Department of Fish and Game. Barney
Schwartz Task Force Volunteers were also on hand helping kids
with bait, fishing poles, and weighing the fish. The
cooperative support of all of these departments made this event
a very positive one for the kids, especially for those who were
new to the sport of fishing.
Kahuna’s Skateboard Camp

Kahuna’s Skateboard Camp, one of the Spring Breakout camps offered March 27- 29, 2008, was a great opportunity for kids to practice their skills for the Monster Skate Competition in April – or just experience a new sport. Garrett Wesch, co-owner of Kahuna’s, ran the camp with the assistance of some dynamic skateboard enthusiasts who demonstrated proper care for the skateboard, safe riding techniques, and great tricks. A mini competition on Saturday had parents and other supporters cheering for some 37 skaters as they vied for prizes. The kids had a wonderful time and left with a deeper appreciation for the sport and safety issues, an increased ability to skate, and a goodie bag as well! Look for more Kahuna camps this summer!
Race Car Camp

The ever-popular Race Car Camp, held March 25 - 27, 2008, found 35 energetic race car drivers, ages 5 – 9, earning their camp race car driver’s license. Competing in all types of racing, including a relay where the racers changed tires, the kids loved every minute of this fun, high-energy camp. The highlight of the event was the final race where drivers raced their own cars, complete with flashing tail lights. Students from the Oak Park Leadership program were at each pit stop teaching the kids about racing, including how to change oil. Kudos to the racers and the staff that made the camp such a success – and a special thank you to Martin Meraz and Dan Vetjsa for their amazingly creative ideas!

Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Community Gallery a
Success!
For the first time ever, our Library Recreation Services
Department (LRS), in partnership with civic leaders, church
groups, and the local high school, sponsored a march and
community gallery on Sunday, January 20, commemorating the
powerful vision and message of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Led by the Paso Robles High School Band, participants marched to the City Library for a reception and viewing of works expressing Martin Luther King, Jr’s message of embracing diversity. The Paso Robles High School students were a key part of the day, being represented by members of the Black Student Union; drama, dance and music students; and leaders from the Youth Commission and the campus leadership class. Other presenters displayed their talents in the form of art, music, dance, and various readings of Dr. King’s writings or of their own original work. The event was so well-received that it will undoubtedly become an annual event.
