This program allows a once-a-year payment from the State of California to qualified individuals based on part of the property taxes assessed and paid on their homes.

You may be eligible to file a 2008 claim for Renter Assistance if you are a United States citizen, designated alien or qualified alien when you file your claim and you met the following criteria on December 31, 2007:

  • You were 62 years of age or older, blind, or disabled,
  • You lived in a qualified rented residence in California,
  • You paid $50.00 or more per month in rent on that residence, and
  • You had a total household income of $42,770, or less.

The filing period is July 1st – October 15th. The forms will not be available at the Senior Center until July 1st. No requests for appointments will taken before July 1st.

Senior Peer Counseling

How would you like someone to just listen? Someone to brainstorm with? Someone to just bounce things off of? Someone to do some creative problem-solving with? Well, there is someone that will do all of that…. That is a Senior Peer Counselor.

Senior Peer Counselors are trained volunteers who will come to you – in your home for one hour a week to just be with you and support you as you work out whatever concerns you might have. Concerns such as:

  • Changes in your life
  • Health problems
  • Caregiver issues
  • Losses
  • Family conflicts

This is a free service provided by caring people, all age 55 or older, to anyone in San Luis Obispo County who is age 60 or older. These volunteer counselors receive 60 hours of training and are dedicated to serving our community. They are part of the Senior Peer Counseling Program of the Wilshire Foundation. For information please call Carol Schmidt, Program Director at 547-7025 ext. 15.
