Join the Library's Summer Reading Program 2021 for a celebration of reading, programs and all things colorful.

Register here.

June 14-August 14, participate in "Reading Colors Your World" and read to win great prizes! Simply register and log your minutes. Complete 10 hours of reading and win a goodie bag: sensory activity, book and crayons or pen for children and teens; mug, journal and colored pencils for adults. All winners will also be entered into the grand prize drawing: an Occulus II Virtual Reality Headset!

Theme-based classes and events for both children and adults are guaranteed to bring more color to your world this summer! Check them out below. (Online registration required for some.)

JUNE

Adult Classes & Events

In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully-brewed coffee for more than one hundred years and with it the chance to travel back in time. But only for as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold. The title is available in print and audio through the library and as an eBook or eAudiobook on the hoopla Digital platform. Intermediate crafters will enjoy the challenge of creating an embroidered version of the classic Japanese work of art, The Great Wave of Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Registration with a library card is required for all participants by June 11 to receive craft kit materials and information about the ZOOM meetup on Wednesday, June 23, 7:00 pm. For ages 16+.

Children's Classes & Events

Try It! Tuesdays is gearing up for the summer with Grab & Go kits! Stop by the library any time starting the Wednesday before to pick up a Try It! Tuesday kit containing everything you need to participate then tune in to Facebook at 4:00 pm to Try It with Miss Melissa. It's fast, it's fun, and it's free!

This week, pick up your Marble Maze Kit then join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, June 15 to learn how to engineer a marble maze using everything in your kit, plus a baking sheet from your kitchen! Kits for our June 15 class will be available starting Wednesday, June 9 while supplies last.

A high-energy music and comedy show, Why Reading Rocks! encourages reading and a love of books by engaging kids (and adults!) with songs, comedy, bubbles, and music technology. Best of all, it’s inclusive for all kids, including those on the autism spectrum. Each song is designed to help kids learn, dance, sing, and have fun, all while learning why reading is so important for their future and a great way to spend their free time. Registration is required to receive information to participate in this program.

Join us for a virtual theater performance of The Rainbow Lizard by the Traveling Lantern Theater Company. Pablo Del Peacock (the famous portrait artist) is trying to paint a picture of beautiful Monique Gecko, but every morning she arrives a different color and he has to begin all over again. He and his friend Fatima Flamingo (taking a break from her Flamenco lessons) search for answers. When they solve the mystery and Pablo learns about Monique’s diverse heritage, he decides to paint his new masterpiece using all the colors of the rainbow. Become a Paleontologist with this week’s Dinosaur Excavation Kit! Join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, June 22 to learn how to carefully extract some dinosaur bones from hard clay removed from a recent dig site! Kits for our June 22 class will be available starting Wednesday, June 16 while supplies last.

Tuesday, June 29 - Try It! Tuesdays: Water Bead Stress Ball Kit
This week, we’re going to chill out with a Water Bead Stress Ball Kit! Join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, June 29 to learn how to make your own soothing water bead ball. Kits for our June 29 class will be available starting Wednesday, June 23 while supplies last.

It's 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world's greatest detective, is being transported from Indonesia to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes? Intermediate crafters will enjoy the challenge of creating an ocean scene similar to the one shown based on the techniques of Samantha Wood Art. Using simple materials such as glue and paint, learn a version of the traditional Indonesian fabric dyeing technique known as batik. Registration with a library card is required for all participants by July 9, 2021 to receive craft kit materials and information about the Wednesday, July 28, 7:00 pm ZOOM meetup. For ages 16+.

Shadow School is a cross-curricular virtual puppetry program designed for elementary-aged audiences. It features a series of three engaging, self-paced online workshops that cover the science of shadows, poetry-writing, and shadow puppet-making. While these workshops are geared toward elementary-aged participants, anyone interested in learning about the art of shadow puppetry is welcome to register for this workshop series.  Registration is required to receive information to participate in this program.

Tuesday, July 6, 4:00 pm: Try It! Tuesdays - Foam Bead Slime Kit
This week, pick up your Foam Bead Slime Kit! Join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, July 6th to learn how to make colorful and crunchy sensory slime! We will be using Elmer’s Glue and activator, to make this textural delight extra fast and easy. Kits for our July 6 class will be available starting Wednesday, June 30 while supplies last.

Register to reserve your seat in our virtual paint party just for teens! Once you’ve registered, stop by the library to pick up your painting kit, containing everything you will need to join Miss Melissa on Thursday, July 8 at 11 am on Zoom. This virtual paint party will walk participants through painting an evening desert scene. Prefer the mountains? Maybe a redwood forest? No problem! This project can be customized to suit your scenery of choice in any colors you like! Registration is required to receive information to participate in this program.

Week of July 11: Traveling Lantern - Caterpillar Hunter
Based on the beloved character of the late Steve Irwin, the Caterpillar Hunter shrinks himself and sets off to explore the terrain, pursuing elusive bugs and strange herbage in the wild recesses of a common North American vegetable garden. Crikey! Join in his exciting backyard adventure! Registration is required to receive information to participate in this program.

This week, we’re going to sew our own felt Dinosaur friend! Join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, July 20 to learn how to stitch up this simple project, great for beginners. Kits for our July 20 class will be available starting Wednesday, July 14 while supplies last.

Wednesday, August 18, 7:00 pm: Paso Robles Book Group Reads: Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother, Jaja, lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria, but things are less perfect than they appear. As the country begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili and Jaja are sent to their aunt, a university professor outside the city, where they discover a life beyond the confines of their father's authority. Thursday, August 5, 11:00: Turtle Dance
All Ages!
This is a special inclusive, neuro-diverse event for children and teens of all abilities. Families will dance, sing along, and hear stories and songs about autism advocates who have had incredible success in their lives and careers. There will be bubbles, laughter, dancing, games, incredible visuals, and a story written and illustrated by Mr. Matt’s brother-in-law Tim who is on the Autism Spectrum. Kids will dance, sing, laugh, use their imaginations and connect with new friends. The show is crafted to be inclusive for all children, including children on the Autism Spectrum, and a great time for parents and caregivers! Registration is required to receive information to participate in this program.

Tuesday, August 10: Try It! Tuesdays - Wind Chime Kit
Join Miss Melissa on Tuesday, August 10 to make your own wind chime. Stop by and pick up everything you need to craft one of these fun and musical chimes! Kits for our August 10 class will be available starting Wednesday, August 4 while supplies last.
